From Workshop Inspiration to Lasting Leadership Impact

This past week marked a milestone: We launched two sessions of our one-day SONAR Leadership 2.0 workshop at the impressive Trev Deeley Harley Davidson Conference Centre in Vancouver, BC. Over 50 professionals attended each session, and the energy was palpable.

We received much positive feedback both during and following the workshop. Here is one:

“I really appreciate all the tools provided that I will utilize with my own team. You have helped me begin to build my leadership toolbox. I came here with minimal tools, so this is a breath of fresh air. I will be challenging myself to be a better leader. Engaging my staff more effectively and inspiring them to be better.”

Inspired, Empowered, and Now What?

We’ve all been sitting in workshops, taking detailed notes, and feeling motivated to change the world! Then reality hits as we step outside, and that inspiration often fades like morning mist.

As Mike Tyson famously said, “Everyone has a plan until you get hit in the face.”

I know this experience, believe me. Many times in my career, I have felt inspired by new information and then paralyzed when trying to implement what I learned.

One of my favorite quotes is from Arthur Ashe, the brilliant tennis player, who said:

Start where you are; Use what you have; Do what you can.

The most important advice I give clients while coaching is this: “Let’s just start—there is power in the first step!”

Leadership Growth Beyond the Workshop

So, how do we transform workshop inspiration into lasting change? Let’s explore seven practical strategies:

1. Start Small, Stay Consistent

Leadership excellence increases through daily actions. Dedicate just 10 minutes each day to growth through morning reflection or micro-learning. These small efforts compound significantly over time.

  • Morning Reflection: Ask yourself, “What kind of leader do I want to be today?”
  • Micro-Learning: Read one article, watch a short video, or listen to a podcast about leadership.

2. Set a Bold Vision with Micro-Goals

Where do you want your leadership journey to take you? Write down your vision in one sentence. Then, break it into bite-sized, actionable goals.

For example:

  • Vision: “I inspire and motivate my team to exceed their potential.”
  • Micro-Goal: “Have one meaningful conversation with a team member each week.”

3. Create Accountability

Leaders thrive when they’re held accountable. Build a support system:

  • Peer Check-Ins: Partner with a colleague who’s also committed to growth. Schedule biweekly check-ins to share progress and challenges.
  • Mentorship: Seek out a mentor who embodies the qualities you’re working to develop. Their guidance will keep you motivated.
  • Journal Progress: Track your wins and lessons daily or weekly.

We have gifted each attendee of our leadership workshops with our 52-Week Accountability Program. This weekly moment of inspiration lands in hundreds of inboxes each Friday at 2 pm. I share one comment about their growth and then ask them three questions, which are the same every week.

  • What did you do to grow yourself in the past 7 days?
  • What will you do to grow yourself in the next 7 days?
  • Is there anything you feel I can help you with this week?

Not everyone writes back, but the analytics show that many recipients open their emails weekly. This indicates an important fact: they realize they need a little encouragement after the workshop.

4. Practice Daily Leadership Moments

You don’t need a grand stage to lead. Opportunities for influence show up every day. Be intentional:

  • Look for moments to coach or encourage a team member.
  • Ask better questions during meetings to spark creativity and solutions.
  • Celebrate small wins to boost team morale and do so publicly.

Leadership is a practice, not a title. Find ways to embody your leadership values daily.

5. Invest in Continuous Learning

Keep your mind sharp and your perspective fresh. Commit to learning:

  • Books: Choose one leadership book to read in the next month. How to Think Like a Horse was a recommendation from the workshop last week. As I write, it’s on its way to my bookshelf.
  • Courses: Sign up for a short online course that aligns with your growth goals.
  • Workshops: Plan to attend another workshop or seminar within the next six months.

When you invest in your growth, you also invest in those you lead. You demonstrate to others by continuous learning; we create a ripple effect that benefits many.

6. Leverage Feedback as Fuel for Growth

To receive honest feedback and allow others to share with authenticity requires vulnerability. Sincerely inquire:

  • “What’s one thing I can do to support you better?
  • “How do you perceive my leadership style?”

These questions might feel uncomfortable, but the answers are invaluable gifts for your leadership journey.

7. Celebrate the Journey, Not Just the Destination

Recognize that growth is not about perfection but progress.

Celebrate your milestones, no matter how small. Each step forward is proof of your commitment to becoming a better leader.

The real magic of leadership growth happens in the days, weeks, and months following intense learning moments. The tools, habits, and mindset you adopt today will shape your leadership legacy.

Remember, your team, your colleagues, and your organization are counting on you – but more importantly, you owe it to yourself to become the leader you aspire to be.

You have the tools. You have the vision. Now, take action and grow daily.

Remember the words of Mr. Ashe:

Start where you are; Use what you have; Do what you can.

Have a good week, everyone.
