Toxic Air – Like Toxic Behavior has Serious Implications for Our Wellbeing
In a perfect world, all workplaces would have a positive and collaborative atmosphere without indicating a toxic, negative culture afoot. Although many workplaces have a thriving and upbeat environment, many do not.
Toxic behavior has a profound impact on the mental and emotional well-being of employees. It leads to stress, anxiety, depression, and even physical health issues. The constant exposure to toxicity erodes self-esteem, job satisfaction, and motivation.
Employees spend valuable time and energy navigating the often painful dynamics rather than focusing on their work. In our Respectful Workplace workshops, I use my experience at high school to talk about how when I sat in the same classroom as my high school bully, I was completely different from the person I was when he wasn’t in the room.
Toxicity diminishes teamwork, collaboration, and innovation—hindering overall organizational success.
A hostile work environment erodes the foundation of a healthy organizational culture built on trust, respect, and open communication. Recognizing and addressing toxic negativity in a workplace and nipping it in the bud should be a top priority for any manager.
