The Transformative Power of Reading
This is not the first time I have written about the importance of reading. I know that, and if you are a weekly reader of the Living Leadership, you do too.
However, with our September focus on “how we show up at work,” I had to start where it all begins – inside of you. Once considered and reflected upon, new ideas and information, or a twist on old ideas and information, will internalize and change how we show up anywhere.
Don’t Throw Books in the Back Seat!
In a world dominated by digital screens and social media feeds that offer fleeting snippets of information, the timeless activity of reading books seems to have taken a backseat in many people’s lives.
In our workshops, when I ask for a show of hands to show me who in the room would describe themselves as a reader, most hands don’t move.
However, the importance of reading books cannot be overstated, as they offer a unique and irreplaceable form of intellectual, emotional, and personal enrichment. In this age of constant distractions, reconnecting with books can bring many benefits that extend far beyond the pages.
Here are some of the most important reasons why we should read more books. And as a bonus – a book I recommend for each point.
Reading Stimulates Mental and Cognitive Growth
Reading books is like a mental workout for the brain. Just as physical exercise keeps our bodies fit, reading keeps our minds agile. We stimulate various brain areas when engaging with books’ complex narratives, ideas, and vocabulary. This mental exercise improves cognitive functions such as critical thinking, problem-solving, and comprehension. Regular reading can even contribute to a reduced risk of cognitive decline as we age.

Reading Expands Knowledge and Perspectives
Books are treasure troves of knowledge waiting to be discovered. They offer an in-depth exploration of various subjects, allowing readers to delve deeply into topics of interest. Whether you’re exploring history, science, philosophy, or fiction, books provide an opportunity to expand your understanding of the world and the people in it. They introduce you to new ideas, cultures, and perspectives, fostering empathy and broadening your horizons.

Enhanced Vocabulary and Communication Skills
A rich vocabulary is an essential tool for effective communication. Reading books exposes you to a new landscape of words, phrases, and sentence structures you might not encounter in everyday conversations. As you encounter unfamiliar words in context, you learn their meanings and nuances, strengthening your language skills. This, in turn, enables you to express yourself with eloquence and persuasion.

Stress Reduction and Relaxation
Books offer an escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life. Engaging with a captivating story or immersing yourself in a thought-provoking non-fiction work can provide a much-needed mental retreat.
Research has shown that reading can lower stress levels. When you read, you redirect your focus and allow a temporary disconnect from your worries. Reading itself can be meditative, promoting relaxation and inner calm.

Imagination and Creativity
Unlike movies or television, where images are presented, reading requires actively engaging your imagination. As you read descriptions and visualize characters and settings, you become a co-creator of the story. This mental visualization process enhances your imagination and nurtures your creativity. It encourages you to think beyond the text, envisioning possibilities and outcomes beyond the confines of the written words.

Empowerment through Personal Growth
Books have the power to inspire and motivate. Whether through self-help books, biographies of successful individuals, or stories of resilience and triumph, reading can ignite a spark within you. Learning from the experiences of others can empower you to set and achieve goals, overcome obstacles, and strive for personal growth. The stories of characters facing challenges and making choices can often resonate deeply with your journey, providing valuable insights and guidance.
